Garnier Ultra Blends was a.k.a Ultra Doux in the 1990s!

As a pre-teen I was a part of a local children’s club called Twinkle Club! Twinkle Club organised movies and fairs for children which were super fun (not so much for the accompanying parents!) In one such event, sample size bottles of Ultra Doux shampoo was distributed to the kids. It was the Apricot version that claimed to have a “no tears” formula due to which it was liberally handed out to the kids. My curiosity levels were very (very) high at this age and I decided to test out if the “no tears” claim was any good! After returning home, I took a nice dollop of shampoo, worked it into a nice lather and stuck it into my eyes and guess what the claim was definitely not true!

Fast forward a decade or two, and I see Garnier has reintroduced Ultra Doux shampoo from the 1990s as Garnier Ultra Blends, a part of worldwide relaunch. India has seen a significant rise in the trend of using natural products and so I guess Ultra Doux was repackaged with words like  ‘Natural Extracts’, ‘Oils’, ‘Herbs’, ‘Henna’, ‘Paraben Free’  to capitalize on this demand.

Due to my previous experience, I was apprehensive about the claims. But then look at that packaging! If not anything my bathroom shelf would look pretty. (Yes, I am that person who is the core target audience for packaging designers!)

Product Review:

I have gone through the Henna & Blackberry bottle in a matter of few weeks.  It claims to make the hair nourished, vibrant and shiny.

Garnier Ultra Blends : Henna & Blackberry Shampoo

Well, it did nothing special for my hair. It definitely is gentler as compared to some other supermarket picks. It did not dry out my hair but neither did my hair suddenly become lustrous and shiny! I need to take a lot of product to completely clean my scalp and little-below-the-shoulder length hair. It does the job and has a nice fragrance that doesn’t last for very long.

Garnier Ultra Blends : Mythic Olive Shampoo Review

Garnier Ultra Blends: Mythic Olive Shampoo Review

The Mythic Olive version claims to intensely nourish and make the hair incredibly manageable. This one is also gentle and hence I need a lot of product to get a clean scalp. It does not dry out the hair strands but no intense nourishment happened! My hair was never very unmanageable so there I can’t really judge.

Pros:

  • Attractive packaging
  • Economical
  • Paraben Free

Cons:

  • Contains Sulfates (Cringe!)
  • Average Results

Closing Thoughts:

This is an average shampoo with an above average packaging. If you have normal, relatively problem free hair this one is for you. It does the job of cleaning your scalp but not much other than that.

Did you try this new launch yet? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. nicely written!! just to share my experience.. i had once tried the garnier fructis shampoo to check ita claims. and as unmanageable my hair are, i wasnt even able to comb properly let alone them being lustrous. i never could use a garnier product again..

I’ve tried royal jelly and lavender (chlorinated Chennai water makes my hair fall whenever I wash). Same thought – the fragrance doesn’t last and the shampoo seems milder than the usuals.

    • Jothi Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I don’t think this is one of those, that can become ones favorite! I don’t think I will purchase again. Do check out my other posts. I would love to know what you think 🙂
