OMG! Hyaluronic Acid

I have been trying to make informed purchase decisions for which reading labels and researching the contents of the label is an integral step. Lately I see many moisturizers & serums claiming to have Hyaluronic Acid (HA) as the star ingredient. In Beauty & Skin care world buzz word ingredients are nothing new so I thought I should understand what the noise around Hyaluronic Acid is all about.

Good or Bad

Definitely Good! Looks like it is a one of those that promises extraordinary benefits! It has powerful anti-aging properties and is also one of the best hydrating ingredients for skin. Also it is said to be calming, hydrating, and has antioxidant properties. It works great for all skin types, even for rosacea and acne prone skin. It not just moisturises the skin well, it also helps lock in ingredients one layers on top of it.

Our Body already has it!

Hyaluronic acid is a sugary molecule that occurs naturally in skin’s structure and connective tissue throughout the human body. It helps lubricate the joints and keep stuff moisturised so they stay in the right shape and in the right place. You catch my drift right! LOL

Skin Related Benefits of HA

Hyaluronic acid helps keep every aspect of skin balanced, safe and continuously renewed. It also has a great capacity hold vast amounts of moisture almost, 1000 times its own weight! This characteristic of HA is very  important when it comes to skin aging. Youthful skin has ability to hold water and retain moisture. As we grow old our skin loses this ability. Hyaluronic acid can increase moisture content and revitalize skin’s outer layers so they look and feel softer, smoother, and hydrated! That’s how it instantly improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. No surprise that it is used in Injectible Dermal Fillers.

Can it be applied directly on the Skin?

At present, Yes! Earlier the HA molecules were too large to properly penetrate skin’s surface so results were limited. But now with more scientific research and development there are plenty of  products that offer HA with lower molecular weights that can penetrate through skin’s layers and temporarily plump it while also moisturizing the top layer of skin.

If it is so good then, why isn’t everyone walking around with great skin?

Closing Thoughts

The best method that I can recommend to get HA in your skin care routine is to use a Serum with HA + CD 44. There are other products as well that contain HA but they lack the power packed dosage a serum can provide.

  1. You too follow Liah!! She is awesome, almost a skin doctor. I am a great fan of her’s. I am looking for a nice Hyaluronic acid serum within the reach of Indian market since that video, but all in vain. (Let me know if you come accross one). Nonetheless, my favourite skincare ingredient as of now is Niacinamide. 🙂

    • I have scheduled a post for Niacinamide too! Liah is good, I like the amount of research she puts into her work. And I absolutely agree about not finding stuff locally, but I guess the more people become aware it will start reaching us faster.

  2. I really liked this post. My struggle in the skincare isle, trying to maintain my sensitive skin, brought me to have to get familiar with different chemicals. But boy was it difficult to point out which ones my skin would break out because of. This post is very helpful! Thanks for sharing!
