Due to this very reason companies started mass producing it, and with mass production one needs speed and large volumes for which tonnes of chemicals are used.

Rose Water is the generic term used for different types of the Rose flower water made by different methods, it could be extraction from roses or the mixing of rose oil with distilled water. Major factors that contribute to the quality of Rose Water are the production method used, the species of roses used; whether the petals are fresh or dried and lastly the region in the world where the roses were grown and processed (similar to tea wine and coffee; the region where the roses are grown is a major contributor to the characteristics and quality of the final product).

Most commercially available rose waters is a byproduct of making rose oil, and is produced through steam distillation. Also many of them are not actual rose waters, but just water with rose aroma added. These waters are not going to have any positive benefits other than the very strong rose smell.

How to Identify Good Quality Rose water?

How to Identify Good Quality Rose water?

Here’s a few tips on how to recognize quality Rose Water:

  • Like I always say read the ingredient listed on the bottle. It shouldn’t mention anything other than rose & distilled water.
  • Look for the word steam-distillation on the bottle. This method of productions retains nutrients and ensures purity.
  • Rose water should be transparent in color. If the color is pink, it likely has additives.

Even if one finds a product that meets all these requirements, one can still never be absolutely sure of its purity. But a product that comes close is Kama Ayurveda’s Pure Rose Water.

Kama Ayurveda | Pure Rose Water- Face & Body Mist | Ingredients & manufacturing Details

Kama Ayurveda briefly explains how they use Steam Distillation to make Rose water here.  Rose Water produced through steam-distillation of the fresh rose petals retains nutrients and has water-soluble active ingredients that are not present in the rose waters made by other methods.

The roses they use are from Kannauj which is known for its Rose farming and Perfumeries that used to specialize in making Attar. Sadly due to mass manufacturing and big companies taking over with their chemical based alternatives most of these Perfumeries are shutting down. I was quite thrilled to know this and was able to trust the purity of the product and hence was willing to shell out that much money for a relatively small quantity of product.

I use it to make face masks and spray it on my face post threading/plucking to sooth the irritation. It refreshes the skin without any stickiness or residue. It has a faint rose scent which thankfully doesn’t overwhelm ones senses! It doesn’t tighten pores or reduce oiliness as claimed; because those are dependent on many- many other factors that are out of the scope of a simple Rose water to correct. I can’t say about the balancing Skin PH because I don’t have the tools to test out this point.

Kama Ayurveda | Pure Rose Water- Face & Body Mist

Pros:

  • Made in India
  • Made of Organic Roses
  • Steam Distilled

Cons:

  • Very Expensive
  • Doesn’t spray a fine mist like other toners in the market.

Closing Thoughts:

It’s an expensive product but I am OK to shell

out the big bucks because the brand is promising purity without using chemicals. If you are not willing to spend as much but still want to ensure quality; it is easy to make Rose Water at home, but the shelf life wont be very high.

Let me know your thought on Rose Water and other Kama Ayurveda products in the comments.

    • Like I said we are trusting the brand for the quality and hence shelling out the big bucks. So go for it. I am really interested in checking out mogra and lavender water.

    • Gargi, you can but it won’t be as effective on the pH balancing front. To know more about toners read my post on Toners, hopefully that will give you a good direction to start.

I want to tell you that there is also another rose water available in the market namely ZOFLA rose water (price rs 160 for 100ml) which is 100% pure and made of kannuj rosses. In my opinion this rose water is even better than KAMA rose water
