Rose Hip Seed Oil – Beauty Ingredient to Know

Everyone from Celebrities to Models to Derms seem to give their nod to this miraculous oil which holds the secret to gorgeous skin.  But what is it about rose hip oil that makes it so special?

Rose Hip Seed Oil – What?

Rose Hip Seed oil comes from the seeds of a special variety of rose- Rosa Canina. It is a carrier oil and is not be confused with Rose Oil which is an essential oil.

Rose Hips are Seed Pods left behind after the Petals have Dried & fallen

Rose Hip oil is produced from the fruit and/or seeds of the rose plant. This is the fruit/ seed pod left behind after the rose has bloomed and petals have dried and fallen off. It looks like a berry and I have not seen this anywhere in India. Using varied methods of extraction, the oil is separated from the hips and seeds. Cold Pressed method of extraction is preferred since it retains the maximum nutrients.

Rose Hip Seed Oil – Why?

It contains vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are known to fade dark spots and hydrate dry/ itchy skin, all this while reducing scars and fine lines. Rose Hip Seed Oil offers several benefits when applied externally to facial skin. It protects the skin and increases cell turnover because it contains vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin A, which are all antioxidants that help fight free radicals.

Rose Hip Seed oil’s healing properties are due to its chemical structure. It contains essential fatty acid, which when absorbed through the skin helps cellular membrane and tissue regeneration;  i.e anti-aging benefits! (who doesn’t want that!) It is particularly high in Vitamin C, making it one of the richest plant sources for the skin and another very good reason to make it your best friend.

Skincare Benefits of Rose Hip Seed Oil

Anti-Aging Properties

Rose Hip Seed Oil has significant anti-aging benefits for your face, that stem from the high amount of antioxidants and the oil’s ability to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. The Vitamin C and A, in particular, stimulate collagen production. Because Vitamin-A has small molecules, it allows deeper penetration into the skin and improves the skin’s moisture levels which in turn helps in reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

Protection from Age Spots & Sun Damage

The antioxidants found in Rose Hip Seed Oil fights free radicals that cause sun damage and age spots. The Vitamin A, combined with the oil’s essential fatty acids, can help improve skin tone, texture and pigmentation. Too much sun exposure can decrease collagen, vitamin C can help counteract this damage. But prevention is better than cure so sunscreen always!

Helps With Eczema and Reduces Scarring from Acne:

The essential fatty acids found in Rose Hip Seed Oil can help reduce scars and the effects of eczema by helping skin regeneration. Essential fatty acids are emollients, which improve the skin’s flexibility and permeability and help the skin repair itself. The Vitamin A can play a role here as well since it has the ability to improve skin texture and tone. Also, these essential fatty acids can aid in reducing dry scalp and itchiness!

How to Use Rose Hip Seed Oil in your Skin Care Routine

Rose Hip Seed Oil – How?

  • Rose Hip Seed oil is prone to photo-damage and can easily go rancid, so it’s important to store it in a cool, dark place. Goes without saying that it needs to be packaged in a dark tinted container to prevent light from effecting its shelf life.
  • Cold-pressed method of extraction is better for Rose Hip Seed because it retains more nutrients and of course if you can find an Organic variety that would be ideal.
  • Can be applied directly to the face (or under makeup) using gentle, massaging motions or mixed with other oil based products.
  • Can also be applied to the scalp & hair to help with dryness and flaky scalp.
  • Applying the oil twice a day concentrated on areas of need like a scar or pigmentation can have great benefits. While it can reduce acne scars, it should not be applied directly to active acne.
  • Can help heal burns, alleviate itchy skin/ dry patches and is said to reduce appearance of stretch marks.
  • Rose Hip rates as a 2 on the comedogenic scale, which is moderately low risk of clogging pores. ( Jojoba and sweet almond are also 2 on the comedogenic scale.) So the folks with Oily Skin can also try it. Of course a patch test is a prerequisite.

Rose Hip Skin Care Seed Oil – Packaging Matters

Closing Thoughts:

I have been using The Ordinary – 100% Organic Cold Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil since a few months now. I apply it to my face at night as the last step in my skincare routine either on top of, or instead of, my Estee Lauder Serum & finish by smoothing any excess over the back of my hands and cuticles. I will post a review for it soon.

For those who are seeking to avoid chemicals (and Botox!), Rose Hip Seed Oil might be the perfect choice. It is a safe and natural solution to repair the skin’s surface and restore elasticity.
