I have been wanting to try a transparent mascara since ages; in hopes for getting those naturally fluttery lashes that look fab without looking made up with tonne of black mascara. Well a girl can hope, right? So when I saw this MegaClear Transparent Mascara by Wet n Wild I had to check it out!
I got mine from Nykaa and I had to wait forever because it was out of stock for the longest time. I had it added to my wishlist & one fine day I got an email that it was back in stock and to be honest I don’t think I have ever checked out my cart as fast as I did that day!

Product Description:
The MegaClear Mascara is every girl’s must-have! Perfect for accentuating those gorgeous lashes, this mascara features a clear formula that lifts and separates for a defined look! Fortified with Soy protein and Vitamin E, this non-budging formula helps condition lashes and gives them a base coat of protection that can be used as a seal to stop color mascara flaking. To top it all off, the clear finish is also great at taming and setting those messy brows in place.
Claims:
- Clear formula that lifts and separates
- Fortified with soy protein and vitamin E
- Seals in mascara to prevent flaking
- Tames brows with one swipe
Ingredients:
Water/Eau, Alcohol Denat, Triethanolamine, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Panthenol, Chlorphenesin, Glycerin, Trisodium EDTA, Tocopheryl Acetate (conditioning agent), Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Methylisothiazolinone
When this product reached me I was a little skeptical because it did not have the outer blister packing. It just had the cling film type plastic cover. I had heard folks complain about receiving fakes from Nykaa so this fact worried me but I decided to trust Nykaa’s claim to sell authentic products and move on. The clear formula is packed in a basic plastic tube which is also transparent with a blue cap that is attached to a slim spoolie brush.
The formula is thin in consistency and somehow always feels cool out of the tube. The consistency is way thinner than any colored mascara, I believe this helps in coating the lashes better. It does not have any perceptible scent.
A point to note is with consistent use over time the clear formula starts becoming milky. Also the folks who fill their brows and then use this over the brow powder/pencil will find their transparent liquid taking the colour of the brow product. To me this is a pretty rude & gross reminder of how much our dead skin/ makeup/ etc we transfer back into our personal care products!
The spoolie is thin and made of dense bristles. It is easy to use under the lashes (on the lid) but coating the top of the lashes is difficult because it doesn’t catch on-to the lashes so that one can roll the lash hair with the brush. I am not sure if this is a design drawback or a formula issue. I am assuming this basic rolling action is much easier with colored mascara due to the thick formula that grabs onto the lash hair and rolls it along with the brush while holding the brush on top of the lashes. The spoolie size is perfect for the bottom lashes though.
The formula is such that it doesn’t clump but often if one goes over-board some clumps will get formed. I noticed if I am not mind full of removing these right away, after drying these clumps become white crystals which looks like morning eye gunk that I forgot to clean! LOL
The spoolie definitely helps separate the lashes and the formula coats them evenly. Unfortunately despite the great start, the effect doesn’t last for very long. The good & bad part is that the formula feels like nothing on the lashes (it doesn’t make the lashes crunchy or flaky at all) and while that feels great it doesn’t have the capacity to hold onto the curled & separated lashes for more than an hour.
I also tried it on my brows and the findings were pretty much the same. The effect lasts only for a short while. I have pretty tame brows that remain in one place even without any product. But if one has unruly brow hair they might be in a better position to take a judgement on this bit. But I am guessing it wont work beyond a few hours.
I also tried using it as a base coat for lashes i.e. coating my lashes with colored mascara over this transparent mascara and this did work to some extent. But it did make individual lashes feel heavily coated and personally for me this was an over kill. Considering the colored mascara in itself could be used twice to achieve the same effect nullifying the justification of an extra product.
Pros:
- Affordable
- Versatile – can be used as mascara for lashes, brow gel & base coat.
- Contains conditioning agents like Vitamin E & Soy Protein.
Cons:
- Effect doesn’t last very long
- Not easily available offline
Closing Thoughts:
An important point that cannot be ignored about this product is the fact that one is led to believe that they are not wearing any product due to this being transparent & not very effective. I often forget to remove it due to this reason! This is not a problem on the product’s part but one definitely needs to be mindful of this and ensure that just because it cannot be seen doesn’t mean that there is no product near our eyes. One needs to ensure that it is removed properly at the end of the day.
The claims about versatile usage at the affordable price point was a huge point in this products favor. Despite this the product unfortunately didn’t work for me and I don’t intend to repurchase it unless it is re- formulated.
Have you tried this or any other clear mascaras before. let me know your experience in the comments. Also find some more Mascaras I have tried here & here.
Thanks Trishna! I am glad to know you are making use of this product. Unfortunately it isnt working very well for me.
