KinGirls: Face Masks | Review

I love exploring new brands and especially niche Asian ones that offer specialty Sheet Masks! So naturally I was thrilled when Beaute. One sent me some face masks from the brand KinGirls to try. This is the first I was hearing of Beauty.One- the online store  & KinGirls- the brand, and am I glad I did!

The Online Store- Beaute.One

Beauty. One is a relatively new online store that stocks imported skin care, make up and personal care products that are ordinarily not available to us offline. They also guarantee that their offerings are genuine and are exclusively licensed and imported directly from the brands. With the cropping up of many Instagram sellers that claim to sell genuine product its difficult to know what is real but with a e-retailer like Beaute. One, one can be assured of the authenticity of the product. Also they have recently opened counters at select Shopper’s Stop outlets and are running some great promotional offers. For instance if you buy any two masks, you can get one for free. This offer is available for a limited time so the folks who might be interested should definitely utilize this soon.

The Brand- KinGirls

I was quite intrigued by the KinGirls Masks, they have some very amusing description printed on them that tries to establish that a good mask is like a freshly baked Macaron! whaaa???LOL and I always get very concerned when products manufactured in China have this funny stuff written in English lest it be one of those counterfeits that we get on the MG Road footpath! So I did what I always do; read & researched a copious amount about the brand to understand whether this was genuine, and I was truly surprised to find what I did!

Kingirls is one of the many brands owned by the parent company  GCB – Gwo Chyang Biotech, a Taiwan based pharmaceutical company. GCB initially manufactured injection fluid and diversified into the beauty industry in the 2000’s. They make various kinds of face masks, medical & cosmetic grade that are sold under various brand names like Unitouch & Kingirls.

Quote from their website

“…we apply preservative-free technology, developed in collaboration between the Taiwanese beauty industry, academics and government, to provide the most efficient hypoallergenic skin care products. We aspire to becoming internationally recognized, high-end face mask experts, selling not just beauty, but also health.”

Kingirls’ Macaron Range Sheet Masks’ design inspiration comes from the concept of the afternoon tea with macaroons. The masks are also presented in a dainty foil pouch with lovely pastel themed colours, in a round shaped pack that resembles the Macaroon. They try to echo the excitement of freshly baked macarons presented as an object signifying beauty and elegance. This series of masks also claims to includes pure, organic, essential oils as their key ingredient.

Initially I found the whole comparison with the Macaroon quite amusing but after reading through the material I realized the brand uses it as a metaphor even in their packaging as explained in the image below. It is a classic attempt by their marketing to come across as cute & fun for the “Kawaai” loving Asian Markets.

These masks have also won the prestigious French beauty award  Les Victoires de la Beauté (The Victories of Beauty) which is a big deal due to the fact that its judged by a set of consumer groups who test the product under real conditions without knowing the brand. The tests are said to be monitored by analytical laboratories who make sure the test methods are properly applied and the test parameters are consistent. This method of credible testing is what gives Victoires de la Beauté its importance and good reputation.

After researching all this I had amassed a satisfactory amount of knowledge about the products genuineness and was feeling confident enough to try them out. I was sent two masks the Caviar Grape Leaf 3D Face Mask & Raspberry Extract Face Mask.

I absolutely loved how well this Caviar & Grape Leaf 3D Face Mask hugged my face. I used it on a super hot summer night and totally loved the feeling which potentially could have been a super claustrophobic experience. I say this because it is a 3D mask and they call it that for a reason. It is seamed in the center (check out the instructional diagram above carefully) along with cut outs for the ears. The seamed mask is larger and goes till below the chin and the ear cut outs can be hooked behind the ears, due to which it hugs the face tightly while also lifting it. The suture in the center also helps in aligning the mask correctly.

This mask is made of a thicker material than the Raspberry Extract Variant.  Despite the thickness I absolutely did not feel like it was overwhelming at any point. In fact due to the tight adherence it also did a very good job of hydrating the face and the neck.

This did have a gentle grape fragrance but nothing overpowering. This mask came dipped in a creamy essence. The consistency of which was like a thin eye cream. I kept it on for around 20 minutes and it left the skin feeling very well hydrated and cool to touch. I used it before sleeping and in the morning my my skin felt smoother & supple like I had done a through of job of moisturizing. Out of the two I liked this one better mostly because of the “3D” experience and I also found it to be more hydrating.

I tried the Raspberry extract version first out of the two. Raspberries are known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory proprieties. The also help suppress oxidization and therefore, inhibit the free radical production. Along with Raspberry the mask ingredient list shows that it contains a few other flower, seed and fruit extracts like Lavender, Vanilla, Bergamot Orange, Pineapple, Orange Peel, Sage, Rosemary, Apple,Tahitian gardenia, Anise Seed and Acai fruits.

Despite the big list of pretty intense smelling extracts from fruits and flowers the mask & serum don’t really have a intense scent. The fragrance is barely there and so mellow that its almost imperceptible.

This mask’s material is very thin, but it doesn’t tear or stretch out of shape and the fit is nice. The mask sheet has a plastic backing that can be kept on to position the mask correctly and once a satisfactory position is achieved the plastic cover can be removed. The plastic does have a ton of essence stuck to it so make sure you use it on your hands before trashing that sheet.

The only problem here is that perhaps the mask is sized to fit South Asian faces and need to be made slightly bigger to include people from other regions. Personally I found it to be small for my face, especially the eye cut outs were not big enough due to which the essence was very close to my eyes so I constantly had to wipe & adjust so that it doesn’t get into my eyes.

The essence used is very watery and if you are sitting while wearing the mask the essence flows down towards the neck due to gravity so perhaps consider wearing it while you are lying down.

I left the mask on for 15-20 minutes per the instructions after cleansing & toning. Surprisingly the mask was pretty dry by then but I also need to mention that its summer here and at 35 degrees (Celsius) that is natural. I removed it to reveal soft and hydrated skin. Most masks I have used so far often leave the skin feeling tacky but this essence was completely absorbed by the skin and it left the skin feeling matte and smooth, almost as if I had used a primer. I used it at night but due to the reason mentioned above I think this mask is a great morning mask as it will leave the face prepped for the next skincare step or makeup.

Closing Thoughts:

The KinGirls Macaron series although primarily focuses on being fun but at the same time they have not disregarded quality. These masks retails for a much higher cost as compared to the ones that are available from Innisfree & The Face Shop. I believe the reason for this is the material of the mask i.e bio-cellulose. Bio-cellulose is said to retains high levels of moisture, meaning your mask won’t dry out quickly and it adheres to the skin better which helps in even absorption of the product. Also some other points that elevates their quality is the fact that the essence is claimed to be hypo allergenic and any scent that is perceived is due to essential oils and not added fragrance. Also it goes without saying that these being free of the terribles (parabens, fragrance, mineral oils, chemical additives, MI and MC the problem preservative) is a huge point in their favor.

Considering all the above and the fact they make for an enjoyable masking experience I definitely recommend you try them out. They are pricey as compared to the regular ones so may be for a special occasion where you would want your face to be at its best.

I am thankful to Beaute. One who is making such niche Asian Brands available to us and also for letting me try these out. If you have tried masks from this brand please do let me know your experiences in the comments. Also check out the masks I have tried from other brands here & here.
