To be absolutely honest Mascaras confuse me! There is a ginormous number of options available these days each holding a promise to give one the lashes of their dreams. There are the high-end cult favorites and the ones that have been around historically. I am generally tempted to play around within that safe zone but this time I wanted to try out something new – something drugstore – something that promises to make my lashes look “fan”tastic so after some research (because well, Ms.P cannot NOT research!) I settled on the waterproof variant of Maybelline Lash Sensational.

A mascara for me is all about the brush. Even if the formula isn’t great if they offer a great brush half the battle is won. And this one has a very interesting brush on it. It has two sides with different curves. The inner curve with smaller bristles is meant to volumize and cover the complete lash right from its roots. Whereas the outer bristles which are longer are meant to fan out the tips.
This is what I don’t like about marketing, the bristles actually look much longer in the advertisement photos, like they’re going to get right in between all of your lashes and coat them easily. But in reality they are much shorter and stubbier and don’t coat the lashes individually, it just sort of paints over & under them. You will need to put in effort to get the sides coated.
The formula is a slightly thick and the brush tends to bring out much more than what is needed at once. So I often need to remove the excess over the rim which is wasteful because there is no way to push it back inside and that much product goes to waste each time and tends to dirty the top of the tube.
It takes a minute to dry so one needs to be careful not stain the top of the lids and be patient while layering it. If one is hasty, clumps are bound to appear attributed to the thick formula.
Despite coating the lashes with mascara they don’t become stiff and crunchy which is a big relief. If I coat the lashes once it looks like “Hey, I am wearing mascara” and if I coat it twice its like standing on top of the building and shouting “HELLOoo! I AM WEARING MASCARA” This is also because I naturally have long and voluminous lashes so I always stop at just one coat. But folks who have shorter sparse lashes will need to work hard to make this work.
My only beef with this product is, it is extremely difficult to remove. I am devoted to Micellear Water and one of my favorites- Bioderma Sensibio H2O gave up on me while removing this bad boy. Its time-consuming and I almost end up pulling out at least a couple of lashes while removing this. No doubt this is long wearing and you can go swimming with it which is great but personally I don’t like wasting that much time at the end of the day struggling to remove this. In past I have used waterproof products that were a breeze to remove; so I guess not all mascaras are made equal.
To summarize it will work, if you will! Overall it’s not the finest Mascara around but its not completely bad either. If you are looking for an affordable long wearing product this might be a good place to start.
