Colourpop Haul – Review &Swatches

After all burnt child dreads fire so this time I got the stuff shipped domestically within USA to a friend whose kind parents hand carried it to me in India! (Thank god for all these enablers in my life)

After the mixed experience with product quality, this time around I stuck to bestsellers, relying heavily on product reviews & photos on the website. I really thought there was no way I could go wrong with the stuff this time. Let me tell you right away that I need a better guard against my own over-confidence!

1: Crème Lux Lipstick | Shade: Cmon Sis

This lipstick is from the Crème Lux Lipstick range. The colours were created by beauty blogger, Shayla in collaboration with Colourpop. The Lux lipsticks are quite creamy and offer really great pigmentation. It goes on smooth and deposits enough colour in just one pass. Due to this if there are any imperfections on your lip they look enhanced so I recommend to use this on prepped lips.

The colour is a soft pinkish brown and gives a creamy matte finish. It has a considerable staying capacity and  I noticed even after an oily meal still some amount of pigment is seen on the lips. The only downside is that despite being claimed to be hydrating it isn’t! Although definitely more comfortable than liquid mattes but in comparison to other cream lipsticks not so moisturizing after all!

Locally available / Indian brand (example Nykaa) have semi matte lipsticks that cost around 300-400 INR and also have 1.7- 2 grams of more product which perform equally well. Therefore unless one is buying a specialty colour I don’t find these worth purchasing and enduring all the shipping related hassles.

2: Crème Lux Lipstick | Shade: Still Crazy

This is also from the Crème Lux Lipstick range. Everything about this is the same as the shade above “Cmon Sis” other than the colour. The brand describes it as a mauvy pink but in reality it is a lot more cool toned. The blue tone in it has very little warmth so it absolutely doesn’t look like the picture posted on their website which I suspect has been taken in yellow studio light.

This is a nice pink colour just that it is not the warm pink I was expecting it to be. It has a creamy matte finish, lasts a good couple of hours and has good pigmentation.

3: Ultra Satin Liquid Lipstick | Echo Park

Cost: 6.50 USD (approx 475 INR) | Buy Online: here| Net Weight 3.2g (0.11oz)

Echo Park is a orange toned nude colour from the Ultra Satin Lip range. The brand describes this range to be equally pigmented as the popular Ultra Mattes but more comfortable due to the added emollients. Also they are clear about the fact that it is NOT transfer proof and I appreciate their honesty. It goes on smoothly on the lip and gives a satin matte finish. The wand isn’t the most precise so one needs to be careful during the application because mistakes are difficult to correct due the high pigmentation.

Again thanks to the picture online I have gone wrong in colour selection. On my medium skin tone this doesn’t look so good. It washes me out and yet again is a lot more cool toned when seen in natural day light in comparison to swatch on their website.

4: Ultra Glossy Liquid Lip gloss | Netta

This shade is brownish pink gloss. Colourpop describes it as a Mid tone pinky Beige. It is apart of the Ultra Glossy Lip range which claims to be offer extreme shine with no stickiness. The colour is created by the Beauty Blogger Ellarie in collaboration with Colourpop.

This colour is beautiful and is going to look beautiful on Indian Skin range. It offers a medium coverage and gives a high shine with no glitter or flex (thank god). It is claimed to be non sticky but that is really not the case, it is quite sticky and my hair is constantly getting caught on it and that is not a great look!

Also I am not sure if I got one from a bad batch but it has really awful chemical smell. I raised this issue with Colourpop asking them whether it was a bad batch and if it is safe to use. There was no explanation about it and they just gave me a coupon code with an expiry date! Pretty unfortunate!

Colourpop: Creme Gel Liner | Shade: Call Me | Swatch in Natural Light

Swathed in a look here:

I wanted a brown gel liner since a while now; because some times black gets just too overpowering. On the days I need a softer look I like to use a brown so this shade “Call Me” seemed ideal because it is a deep brown with slight purplish tone to it. Colourpop calls it “deep plummy brown”.

It goes on smooth and sets completely matte and doesn’t move or transfer after that. The only problem I face is that it sets so quickly that if I am not speedy enough I am not able to spread it or blend it. Smokey eye with this one is going to be a huge challenge. One has to work really fast if they want this product to work! Due to this reason the brand reminds you in multiple ways to close the lid tightly otherwise the whole pot might dry.

Also having the right eyeliner brush is vital, the one I have from Krayolan is slightly soft and wont work with this. One would need a stiff synthetic brush for this, I wish Colourpop would include a small brush with the pack because not everyone is expected to have a ton of different brushes at hand. Also other locally available brands include a brush at a similar price point.

9: No Filter Sheer Matte Pressed Powder | Medium Dark

Cost: 9 USD (approx 670 INR) | Buy Online: here Net Weight 5.50g (0.19oz)

Selecting the right shade for your skin tone online is no easy feat. I do appreciate Colourpop for helping customers out in many descriptive and visual formats but despite that it was difficult. I selected the “Medium Dark” looking at various photos and swatches. It is not the exact colour for me but I can make it work. (See some of the other compact powders I have used so far to gauge the colour for your skin tone MAC, Maybelline, Loreal, LA Girl)

They describe this colour as “Sheer-tinted for medium dark skin tones” and make the following claims.

“Weightless, natural matte sheer pressed powder reduces shine and blurs imperfections in a convenient on-the-go compact. Ultra-fine powder blends seamlessly onto bare skin, over foundation, or as a touch up without creasing or caking. 100% cruelty free, vegan formula was photo tested to never flashback, giving you a natural matte, soft focus look anywhere you go.”

I agree with all of it except “On the go” part, because they don’t provide a sponge or a brush. I guess Colourpop expects one to carry a large fluffy brush in our clutches! Also the packaging is such that even if you want to add your own sponge there is no space. This is the biggest downside of the product.

Colourpop doesn’t lead you to believe that they will provide a sponge and they also make it clear in the below application tips that is one is expected to use a brush. But this fact itself is the biggest disadvantage because not all of us can or would like to carry a brush around.

Application Tips (via Colourpop)

– To wear alone over bare skin, use Large Powder Brush for sheer buildable coverage.

– To set foundation, use Large Powder Brush or Full Fan Face Brush to apply powder all over the face.

– For more precise application, use the Small Fluff Brush to target smaller areas

Closing Thoughts:

Colourpop is known to provide great variety and considerably good quality product at an affordable price point but after experiencing products from this haul and the previous one I can safely say that there are few hits and many misses and for which I don’t need to put myself through the hassle of shipping, customs etc because nowadays equally good products are available locally and at better prices too.

The shades look gorgeous and I would have loved to get the lipsticks. However, I have read what a bad time you had with customs. I am not sure whether I would be keen to order it. Loved the swatches and the detailed review

I have never used any products from Colorpop before and after reading your review I don’t think I will in the future either. It sounds like every single product has something wrong with it.

Great review and really tempting on the product at hand. This is another great cosmetic that we can recommend to everybody.

That’s quite a nice selection for everyday makeup…personally, I liked the Echo Park liquid lipstick most
