Fragrance:

North Bondi: Bergamot, Italian Lemon, Rose De Mai, Magnolia, Lily, Blackberry, Violet, Cedar-wood, Amber, Patchouli, Sandalwood, and White Musk.

How to use:

Spritz it on damp or dry hair to activate natural waves, enhance texture, boost body and give hair memory

  1. Mist damp or dry hair 8-10” from head.
  2. Scrunch with hands for easy, natural waves.

It comes packaged in a simple plastic transparent spray bottle. There is nothing to the packaging it is basic other than the branding which is on trend with its only typography based minimal design. The spray bottle spurts out the product but it is not even and depends on the pressure one exerts. Chances are you will need some practice to be able to get the right control. For the price I wish the spray mechanism could be better designed to give a finer even mist.

Ouai Wave Spray | Branding & Packaging

This product has a strong floral + woody fragrance which to be honest is the highlight of the product. Ouai products all have a strong fragrance and one could buy the fragrance form if they wished. This one is called “North Bondi” and I am glad I like it! But if one ends up not liking the fragrance it would be a deal breaker because it is so strong and after you have sprayed this on the hair it is going to be fragrant for a long time and people adjacent to you will notice it!

I have 2-A hair type. It is flatter at the root and lays close to the scalp, it starts becoming wavy from the ears down. The waves are fine with a loose, tousled texture. There isn’t a lot of volume nor a lot of definition and I run a risk of loosing whatever I have if I end up using a heavy hair styling product. It is long-ish, till the middle of my back and also quite limp over all due to the self-weight of that much hair! Moreover my Indian hair is all of the same colour – dark brown and unlike colored hair it doesn’t catch any light so the waves don’t really come across. (sad face) With that for context I was super thrilled to try the wave spray hoping for all the claims to come true! (Forever Optimist!)

Ouai Wave Spray Review 2A hair type

A grab from my Insta Stories|  My 2A Hair ( This is without any product)

First time around I used it exactly per instructions, sprayed on damp hair and scrunched up the hair. There is only for so long one can scrunch but I gave it more than its due time yet it had no effect on my hair – No texture nor extra Wave! I thought I was doing something wrong; so since I have tried this product in various ways while regulating the amount of product sprayed- on damp hair after shampoo + scrunch, on dry hair + scrunch, on damp hair that I have air dried, on damp hair that I have blow dried, on damp hair then styled with curling wand. Unfortunately none of these methods have worked for me. ( I don’t use it daily and don’t recommend daily use either)

The good part about this product is that it leaves the hair very touchable unlike some of the other hair sprays that make it rough and dry. Although with this if you don’t do a good job of distributing the product and end up spraying a lot just in one area – that part does become crunchy. It took me a little practice to be able to regulate the misting so that it is evenly spread.

Since I have experimented so much with it something I can say for sure is that if this works for your hair you can use it while your hair dries post shampoo or on day or two-old dry hair to revive your hair style or while heat styling. This is because the formula is light enough to not weigh-down the hair strands and doesnt leave behind any product residue.

This did not give me the beachy waves as promised but something that deserves a mention here is the fragrance- it stayed with me for a really long time and I like the scent so it keeps my hair smelling fresh and fabulous!

Pros:

  • Fragrance that stays.
  • Does not dry or make the hair rough.
  • Will work for fine hair.
  • Free of Parabens & Phthalates.

Cons:

  • Expensive.
  • Will not work for heavy hair.
  • Spray is not as fine.

Ouai Wave Spray | Closing Thoughts

Closing Thoughts:

I was really hoping that this would make my waves more defined and give me that piece-y looking hair that is so on trend these days – but to my utmost disappointment it has not worked despite the various ways I have tried to use it. After this spectacular failure I did a copious amount of research within the beauty community and have realized that it has worked for people with finer hair which is not heavy and doesn’t get pulled down with self weight. So if your hair is fine and light chances are this might just work for you!

Have you tried this? I would love to know if you have any tips for me or about other products you are loving. Keep me posted in the comments or hit me up on Instagram and lets discuss beauty!

  1. hey there, so I guess you have tried it? Why do you think it didn’t work… I am curious to know more. Also definitely swinging by your blog.

    • They claim for it to work on all hair types but I am not sure that’s entirely correct considering the coarse curly texture is harder to tame. More information on their page.

  2. I love the wavy look and I wished this product would have worked for you. The product I used to use was discontinued, so I’m looking for a replacement.
