Ouai: Dry Texture Foam | Review

Do you remember Blake Lively’s character Serena Van Der Woodsen from the hit series Gossip Girl? My 20 year old self was in awe of her, she had this effortless style & ohmygod that hair! It had that undone off-duty-model look that caught the sun when she walked through New York. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out how I could achieve that but then I met the Ouai Dry Texture Foam.

Fragrance:

North Bondi: Bergamot, Italian Lemon, Rose De Mai, Magnolia, Lily, Blackberry, Violet, Cedar-wood, Amber, Patchouli, Sandalwood, and White Musk.

How to use:

  1. Use a ping-pong size amount.
  2. Rub product together in hands.
  3. Apply to dry hair from the ends up.
  4. Use a rubbing motion over ends to create piecey look.

It comes packaged in a simple aerosol can. There is nothing to the packaging it is basic other than the branding which is on trend with its only typography based minimal design. The spray will dispense immediately but it is vital you shake the can thoroughly before you spray because instead of foam you might end up with liquid.. this happened to me once and it wasn’t pretty (also for a moment I thought I got a bad batch of product but the next time when I shook it .. it went back to normal)! Also one needs to be gentle with their pressure so that the product dispensed isn’t too much.

The product looks and feels exactly like a mousse. White fluffy foam that one is expected to rub between their hands and then work it through their dry hair. It is fairly easy to use but I do need a significant amount to cover the length on both sides of my face. So if you have short hair you will perhaps get away with using lesser product. The amount will also depend on how stubbornly straight your hair is..if you are one of those unfortunate people you will know what I mean!

This product has a strong floral + woody fragrance which to be honest is the highlight of the product. Ouai products all have a strong fragrance and one could buy the fragrance form if they wished. This one is called “North Bondi” and I am glad I like it! But if one ends up not liking the fragrance it would be a deal breaker because it is so strong and after you have sprayed this on the hair it is going to be fragrant for a long time and people adjacent to you will notice it!

Ouai Haircare Dry Texture Foam Review_ Consistency and Colour of the Product

Ouai: Dry Texture Foam | Consistency and Colour of the Product

I have 2-A hair type. It is flatter at the root and lays close to the scalp, it starts becoming wavy from the ears down. The waves are fine with not too much of a bend. If I comb too much the bend goes away altogether. There isn’t a lot of volume nor a lot of definition and I run a risk of losing whatever I have if I end up using a heavy hair styling product also most of them makes my root greasy so I keep them away at least by a few inches. It is long-ish, till the middle of my back and also quite limp over all due to the self-weight of that much hair! To add to this my scalp is super oily so after two days of shampoo the first few inches of hair closest to my scalp start showing that greasy shine and will stick to the scalp and become even more flatter than usual.

Ouai Wave Spray Review 2A hair type

My 2A Hair

I was using this volumizing shampoo so post shampoo volume is taken care of and I did not want my hair to become extra big so I didn’t use this after shampoo instead I used this on hair that was a few days old and really needed some help on the crown and I was pleasantly surprised when it came through.

I comb through and part my hair in the middle and then keep the two divisions on each side of my face, this helps me cover it all and not miss pieces here and there. Then I spray a laddoo size amount on my hand and rub them together to spread the product all over my hand and then work it through the hair starting from the end and going up. While spreading the product on the hair I make sure I scrunch the hair and rub them between the palms. Ater the process is done I ensure to not comb again because if I do I loose all the hard work immediately!  There is some lift at the roots and an added texture and body to the hair strands. The pieces are more defined and over the hair does look bigger. The best part is unlike other mousse products there isn’t any crunchiness!  Also like other dry texturizing sprays or dry shampoos, this doesn’t make my hair look matte or dusty. But on the downside the effect does not last for very long, I wish it had at least a  little holding property!

Pros:

  • Fragrance that stays.
  • Does not dry or make the hair rough.
  • Will work well for fine/limp hair.

Cons:

  • Expensive.
  • The effect isn’t long lasting.
  • Will not work for coarse & heavy hair.

Ouai: Dry Texture Foam Review | Closing Thoughts

Closing Thoughts:

When the famous Wave Spray by the same brand did not work for me I was super skeptical about this one but I am glad that this did have some effect on my hair. Even if it was for a short while I lived the dream of having having that tousled Serena Van Der Woodsen look ..lol.

Over all the product is nice but it’s not a miracle worker! If your hair is very straight, this may not work for you unless you heat style some waves in advance before applying the product. But if your hair is already slightly wavy, it will enhance that easily.

Have you tried this? I would love to know if you have any tips for me or about other products you are loving. Keep me posted in the comments or find me on Instagram and lets discuss beauty!

I might want to give this a try. I don’t usually go out, so having something like this will come in handy if I get to go somewhere other than the store or the pharmacy. It looks good on your hair though. I just wish the effect would last a little longer so I don’t have to re-apply.

  2. I will definitely give it a try. Hope that brand is available here. Been searching for shampoo that will give ‘life’ to my hear. My hear looks dry because of the water here in the middle east.
