I have been on the lookout for a oil cleanser that can remove waterproof mascara without stinging my eye. Safe to say I have been miserably failing in this quest. I really do like wearing mascara but the prospect of removing it at the end of the day was getting daunting. To rise above this fear I gave it another shot with The Rice Water Bright – Light Cleansing Oil.

About Oil Cleansers:
I know a lot of you have many questions about oil cleansers so let me clarify a couple of things:
1: It is not just used for makeup removal.
Oils cleansers are the first step of your skincare routine especially if you would like to incorporate double cleansing in it. Our face attracts two kind of impurities 1: Oil Based – sunscreen, makeup, and sebum and 2: Water-Based i.e dirt and sweat. Since water & oil don’t mix your regular soap based face wash is not 100% effective in targeting the oil based impurities. Therefore it’s important to use a Oil based cleansers to remove sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum all of which are known to clog pores.
2: Oil Cleansers can also be used by people with Oily Skin.
Yes you read that right! It is a big misconception that Oil cleansers will make the skin more oily. In fact it is very good for oily skin because it effectively regulates the sebum production without drying out the skin. The skin is hydrated and therefore it produces less oil. Remember oil removes oil away from the skin!

The Face Shop Rice: Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil | Sample Size Pack
This product actually comes in a plastic bottle with a pump, which in this case will be very useful since you don’t want to get the bottle oily while using it. The pictures shown here are of a sample size. There is complete product description at the back of the bottle and moreover the pump can also be locked.
The product is quite fragrant in keeping with most of The Face Shop’s offerings. The scent is quite mellow and doesn’t linger. In case you have sensitive skin please ensure you patch test because fragrance is a known allergen, causes sensitivity and breakouts.
The consistency is truly thin and light like the product reads. It is very runny and slides down the palm easily so one has to be careful not to dispense too much
I use this product as the first step in my PM routine. I apply it on dry skin (It’s important that Oil cleansers are always applied on dry skin) and massage the skin for about 20 seconds to remove the dirt and displace the makeup after which I wipe it using a cotton pad, alternatively one can use a washcloth or a damp towel. I have found the above method to be more effective as against the one suggested by the brand i.e applying it on a cotton and then applying the cotton to the face, because cotton pad ends up absorbing too much product and is unable to deposit all of it on the face due to its light consistency.
I have also tried emulsifying the product with damp fingers but this formula despite containing three types of emulsifying ingredients doesn’t quite emulsify like other oil based cleansers. What I mean is, other oil cleansers when emulsified, turn into a milky consistency that is easily rinsed off, but unfortunately this is not one of them.
It does a pretty good job of removing makeup like foundation, BB cream, eyeshadow and eyeliner along with dirt, sebum and sunscreen residue. But unfortunately it is not 100% effective on water proof mascara!
Coming to my primary concern – Does it sting the eye?
I am extremely disappointed to say that it does sting! I am unable to clean kohl from water line nor mascara without massaging the eyelid due to which invariably the product gets into my eye and causes a lot of irritation. Moreover the oil creates a layer and I see everything hazy for sometime till it clears gradually. After using this at night the next day morning I wake up with a lot of eye goop. It’s not pretty!

Closing Thoughts:
If you are someone who wears sunscreen or makeup regularly and are looking to get introduced to double cleansing this product might be a good place to start. I do like how this performs, I just wish it would not sting my eye so much. Probably I am doing something wrong or need to re-learn how to remove eye makeup. This Cleansing Oil seems like a pretty solid product! I’m a fan of the Face Shop but I haven’t tried this in particular as I products with fragrance.
Uh oh, sensitive skin over here so this one might not be for me.
I tried this few years ago and it is one of the good products that I’ve used. Korean beauty items are always superb.
I urgently need to try this. My skin got so bad over the past weeks that I mainly spent at home.
So I have no idea the pain you go through with make up removal or oil cleansing options. But I asked Darcee what she thought about using something like Rice Water cleansing oil and she said that in general they make her eyes burn and thus aggravate her contacts too! So I guess this wouldnt be a great option for her though she doesnt wear mascara too much so it may not be a big deal
This looks really good and I would love to try this because I have acne problems! Thanks for the recommendation!
I think this post is very informative and will be important to a lot of women. Thanks for sharing.
