The Face Shop: Rice Ceramide Moisturizing Emulsion | Review

Ceramides are a hot ingredient as far as Skincare is concerned and for good reason. They are a integral component of the skin barrier. Ceramides are lipids/ fat molecules that help the skin retain moisture and protects it from external aggressors. But like everything a lot of things in life (eg. sanity) you begin to lose this as you age! So when I had a chance to try this Rice Ceramide Emulsion, it is safe to say I jumped at it!

NOTE: The ones marked in red are Fragrance Ingredients and are often known to cause skin sensitivity. Folks with sensitive skin please patch test before using. Find details about the ingredients here.

The product comes packaged in a thick plastic bottle with a screw on lid. This is one of those products that could have really benefited from a pump. If you have a spare lying around I suggest you fix it; because once the product is half done there will be a lot of pounding in the palm. Also if you are not careful a lot will be dispensed and you can’t put it back in!

The formula is extremely fragrant! Of course it would be since it has a host of ingredients that are primarily meant to serve just one purpose- make the product fragrant. The scent is of a generic nature – crowd pleaser is a better description for it! Fragrance is known to cause skin sensitivity so if you are someone with sensitive skin I highly recommend that you patch test this before you go all in.

A lot of folks seem thrown by the name “Emulsion”. It is a term popularized by the Koreans and it is nothing but a, lightweight (mostly water based) facial lotion. It is lighter than a cream and thicker and less concentrated than a serum. If you are someone with a very oily skin it can be used as the final moisturization step. If you are someone with dry to very dry skin it can be used between toner & serum.

This product also has a lightweight – runny consistency due to which it offers great slip. A little bit is enough to cover the whole face and neck. After which I quickly pat it down and it gets absorbed in about 5 minutes.

I am someone with a combination skin type and during the current hot-humid weather it becomes oilier than usual in my T-zone; so I prefer using this on cleansed and toned skin in my AM routine. I follow it up with a sunscreen. It feels cool on the skin and after application the skin feels hydrated and refreshed. It is fairly effective in providing sufficient hydration to the skin without making it feel heavy and sticky. The fact that it is quick absorbing is definitely beneficial and can speed up the morning routine to some extent. It sits well below further layers or makeup like BB cream & Foundation.

I was unable to observe any perceptible difference as far as the claims about Skin Texture correction and reduction of dark spots & hyperpigmentation is concerned. These are not things that can be corrected just in a few months and one would have to dedicate themselves to a product for a minimum of six to eight months to notice any change.

Pros:

  • Lightweight Moisturizer that is effective
  • Provides lasting hydration & feeling of freshness

Cons:

  • Poor packaging design
  • Extremely fragrant and may not wok for sensitive skin
  • Not available offline.

The Face Shop: Rice Ceramide Moisturizing Emulsion | Final Thoughts

Closing Thoughts

Its a basic emulsion that layers well while providing lasting hydration. If you are someone who is a skincare beginner and want to create a skin care routine which is slightly more complex than the CTM, this might work well as an intermediate step for moisturization. The scent can be a deal breaker for some but I am aware that many people have also come to like the fragrance. In all honesty I will re-purchase this product only if the brand re-formulates it without the fragrance.

Let me know in the comments if you have tried this product before. Also let me know if you have any recommendations for me or any other products you would like me to try. Lastly I would love it if you can swing by my Instagram, so that we can talk all things Beauty, Skincare and Design.

Glad to bump into this as I’m not really good choosing a moisturiser, good to know more about Ceramide and very well pointing out the pros and cons of this kind of product very helpful to someone like me

  1. Wow, I’ve never heard of this before, but it seems really nice! It especially seems great because you said it has a strong fragrance, which is something that I love in moisturizers. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Marie says:

I was pretty excited about this at first, but then when you described the fragrance, I wasn’t so thrilled anymore. And I wish there was a way to know if it really lightens dark spots without spending months trying it out, lol.

This is a nice product but I have never heard about Rice Ceramide before. I hope I can get it at Amazon store.

  4. Ceramides are super cool for the skin’s health. However this product has ingredients that are synthetic and irritating to the skin. And a few are considered toxic, though they are allowed in the cosmetic industry.
Appreciate you providing the ingredients list. This is the first thing I go after!

  5. Great review. Some of these products need consistent usage to verify their claims. As you rightly said, it may take a longer period of time to know for sure if it works as they claim.

  6. I think I can deal with the smell, like rice is our staple, I never thought this would be so gracious to apply on our skin. Thanks for reviewing this item. I believe this would help our choices to get.

  7. Michelle says:

OMG! I keep hearing wonderful things about ceramides. It looks like a lovely day lotion. I wouldn’t mind giving it a try!

My skin is extremely sensitive & no Indian products work as i get sports on face after using it 3 rice hardly . But I bought this product few days back and am using it as CTM at night & find my skin so soft and moisturised in the morning & I absolutely like the smell . It works amazing.

  8. Rhea Constantino says:

This is actually after my moisturizer, emulsion locks in the hydration in your face thus to avoid wrinkles and tired skin. Love all anyway most of the products from face shop

  9. stella says:

Hi, Great review. Could you please tell me difference between rice & ceramide emulsion vs rice & ceramide cream. Currently my skin become dry, very dry in summer. So I am not sure should I buy this emulsion or cream.

    • Hi Stella,
Sorry for the delay in response.
Emulsion is a thin version of the cream so in your case of dryness I believe the cream should be more effective.
