To be absolutely honest I got this just for the rich history behind this product and that beautiful bottle! Lets take a moment to admire this wonderful piece of packaging design. Yes I admit, I am (or was, so I would like to believe) one of those people that get swayed by great packaging. This perfume is not for the weak hearted; its strong and bold in every sense of the word.

Background

In 1947, Christian Dior presented his first couture collection and became an immediate global success. Simultaneously he launched his first fragrance, Miss Dior Original.

Sometime during 2012 the house of Dior renamed it’s already reformulated Miss Dior Cherie perfume line as Miss Dior (which does not have any similarity with the original Miss Dior edition from 1947). Both the Dior Cherie and the new Miss Dior are formulated by the famous perfumer François Demachy who is the brain (or shall I say Nose) behind many iconic perfumes.

Miss Dior did receive some criticism from the fans of the original, claiming that it was nothing like the original but then I can’t really comment on that! The perfume is said to be created for the “elegant and spirited young woman in love.”  Like many wonderful things in life, the inspiration behind this fragrance lies in love & romance. The fragrance represents freedom and seduction. Natlie Portman is the face of this fragrance and to drive this point home you need to have a look at its advertisement.

The Fragrance

“Miss Dior is a chypre floral“. If I wasn’t a beauty enthusiast I would have left it here assuming (like perhaps the perfume makers do) that you are aware of what Chypre is! But bear with me while I get into some perfume vernacular ahead to do justice to this beautiful word. Chypre (pronounced as ‘sheep-rah’ ) is believed to be the most beautiful and sophisticated perfume family. (Yes, perfumes have families too! All fragrances fall into ‘families’, classifying scents into those with shared characteristics and notes.)

Chypre comes from the French for Cyprus – not the cypress tree though. Its said that chypre fragrance development dates back to Roman times, and ‘chypre’ as the name for an accord is often mentioned in 18th Century texts related to perfume making.  (Accord: a perfume accord is a balanced blend of notes which lose their individual identity to create a completely new, unified odor impression.) This family is believed to have been named after the island birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. A lot of the aromatic plants which feature in chypre scents flourish on that island (obviously, Aphrodite was born there after all!).

In Miss Dior elements of flowers, fruits and woodiness are played up, like many other chypre fragrances. Its warm, rich & spicy. It opens with very high citrus intensity, almost overwhelming but then it gradually mellows to a slightly less intense rosy jasmine heart and eventually settles down to a sweet – earthy patchouli aroma which lasts for the longest time. With this one, little goes a long way! (Seriously, if you go over board you will give yourself and folks around a headache.)

Closing Thoughts

Miss Dior is a va-va-voom type of a scent, ideal for winter evening parties. Its expensive but then that bottle is going to last for really long. It is not for everyone but if you like bold scents it will make you feel elegant, fabulous and sophisticated. The bottle is fancy enough to make the bleakest of dressing tables shine. Miss Dior to me is like high heels and a tailored dress, it has enough spunk to make your audience look up and take notice.
