This mascara is basically a Beauty Icon! Its been around for 40 long years and still continues to amass awards after awards. Recently Maybelline re-launched the blue colour in this range and almost broke the internet with the noise. There is so much hype surrounding this product that I had to try it for myself.

Maybelline New York | Great Lash Mascara – Is it worth the hype?
In 2016 this mascara celebrated its 45th birthday! For a product to be around for that long the formula has to be solid and the marketing of gold standard! The marketing was definitely on point- check out these print advertisements from 1970’s.

I had ordered it from Ulta quite a while back (to be exact 2015!) and have not been able to make up my mind about it for the longest time so this post comes after a really long test period.
Formula:
It’s a very thin formula unlike some of the other mascaras that I have experienced. This helps it go on the lashes evenly in thin coats which can be built-up to one’s liking. I also feels it helps keep the product alive for longer. Because if you notice in my Ulta haul above I also got a Benefit – They are real mascara and in a span of two years that one has dried up but Maybelline is still quite fresh.
Wear-ability:
It’s quite comfortable to wear, doesn’t get crunchy, does not flake and remains on for as long as you can keep moisture/oil away from it. If you have greasy lids/skin this will not work very well for you. If you accidentally rub your eyes, it will slightly flake but nothing that will ruin your day!

Maybelline: Great Lash Mascara | Formula & Wear
Wash-ability:
I particularly wanted a washable mascara so I went for this. I am amazed at my naivety to think that washable mascara will come off with merely soap and water but trust me that is not the case with this one. Some of it will come off while leaving a black shadow under the eyes and there will still be bits stuck between lashes. But when they say washable it basically means it is not waterproof which is a problem in hot-humid environment because it will transfer due to the sweat and humidity.
Also I need to tell you an embarrassing incident involving this particular property of the mascara. I generally go for a walk at night post dinner, its dark and quite and thats pretty much the only time I have after work.I often use this time to catch up with my phone calls. One such call involved tears. After this emotional phone call when I found my way back to the brightly lit lift lobby I see a man staring at me with a strange expression on his face. I gave him a dirty look and got into the lift and then I caught a glance of my face in the elevator’s mirror and immediately understood his strange expression. This mascara had come off all over my face along with the tears and of course I wiped the tears so it was not a pretty sight! With hindsight I feel bad for doubting this stranger’s intentions!
Folks with oily lids will also find this slightly problematic! The only advantage being that when you make a mistake it is relatively easy to correct it with a damp q-tip/ tissue. No need for make-remover wipe/ eye makeup remover!

Maybelline: Great Lash Mascara – The Wand
The Wand:
The wand is pretty much like a basic spooley but what adds that something extra is that bend. Notice in the image how the spooley part is slightly bent at an angle. This angle helps make the application slightly easier. It is also relatively small in size due to which it separates the lashes quite well and gives a natural look in one coat. This works great even on lower lashes and due to the small size is less prone to accidents. Other than this the wand has nothing special going on.

Is it worth the hype?
I don’t thinks so! It is a good product but then there are many other equally good products available at similar price point. If you have lots of lashes and/or long lashes and are looking for a simple, natural, enhance-what-I-got look, Great Lash is amazing! But most people don’t have that, so definitely not worth all the hype!

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara – Not worth the hype!
Have you experienced this phenomenon of a Mascara yet? Let me know your experience in the comments.
Totally agree with you. I don’t feel that it’s worth the hype!

This is a well-detailed review. With this review, I would try this considering that it comes off easily. This is a plus point for me.

I haven’t tried this particular mascara yet and I’ve been meaning to. Though I’m slightly concerned as my face is a combo of oily and dry, I’m a complete cosmetic noob so I may report back when I eventually get it. Hopefully it is a success.

I actually have one of these rolling around in a drawer somewhere. I don’t wear makeup typically, despite having been an Avon sales rep years ago. My eyes get too sore. Enjoyed reading your review and had to smile sympathetically at your oops with the teary mascara face. 😉

I don’t wear mascara because my eyes are so sensitive in my “older” age. But I know a couple of people that may find your review very helpful.

Great review. I haven’t used that mascara in years because I prefer a bigger wand but its always a great classic.

I’m actually a big fan of this mascara. I think it’s great for a startup makeup kit. I have naturally thick, curly Lashes and this helps add length and separation. I reserve this for natural makeup days.

I tried this mascara many moons ago, when I was first playing with makeup. I wasn’t all that impressed by it then, but I was also obsessed with that roll-on lipgloss, so that speaks volumes. Perhaps it’s time to give it a try again!

I used to love this mascara when I was a teenager, but I bought it recently out of nostalgia and I was so disappointed! The formula was way too wet for my taste, I like something thicker and creamier to really build up the volume. Great review!!
