OGX: Keratin Oil Shampoo | Review

I have been having a good run with OGX Products. See here, here, here & here. So why stop a winning streak eh? Such is the background story as to how I was able to try the OGX Keratin Oil Shampoo. I have seasonal hair-fall, it gets worse in monsoon. Let me know in the comments if you are with me here (hoping I am not being delusional) Also I suffer from the worst case of split ends and going by the claims I was hoping this Keratin Oil Shampoo would help.

OGX: Keratin Oil Anti-Breakage Shampoo Review India | Packaging & Claims

It comes packaged in the classic OGX style plastic bottle which they claim to be eco-friendly since it is made of recycled post consumer resin. Plastic is the bane of human existence and such tiny efforts by brands show that they care.

The shampoo is of a light runny consistency similar to the Sea Mineral Variant from the same brand, that I was using earlier. Due to this one needs to be careful to not squeeze out too much. I have mid-length hair yet I don’t need too much of this. It lathers surprisingly well. A lot more than the other shampoos I have tried from the same brand.

The shampoo is of amber colour and has a lovely vanilla-esq fragrance. It is the nicest smelling variant I have tried so far. It is not overwhelming and doesn’t last very long. If you prefer long-lasting fragrance, you will be disappointed! I am OK with the smell mellowing and eventually disappearing, so this works for me.

The good part about this product and generally most OGX offerings is that they claim to use SLS –free surfactants (learn why this is good – here) and don’t test on animals, so in essence good for your hair & your conscience!

It does a fair job of cleaning the scalp without drying the hair too much. When I use this shampoo and comb my hair I notice that my hair dries quite straight. I otherwise have frizzy wavy hair and this was pretty surprising. I feel this shampoo does dry my hair a bit if I don’t use a conditioner afterwards. (This was not the case with the Argan Oil variant)

I have an oily scalp and frizzy mid length hair, the ends of which are very dry & split end prone. This shampoo definitely helped control the frizz but I don’t think it helped with my split end situation. Hair is soft, voluminous and quite manageable for the first two days after shampoo. But third day onward the sebum takes over and starts weighing it down a bit. It does contain silicones so that has a part to play in the softness that is noticed immediately after shampooing and the eventual weighing down in a couple of days.

As far as breakage is concerned, unfortunately it was not helpful. But then again I suffer from increased hair-fall during the monsoons so can’t really blame it on the shampoo. Sadly, it was unable to contribute in managing the situation but I will try it again next season and update this post.

OGX: Keratin Oil Anti-Breakage Shampoo | Final Thoughts

Pros:

Cons:

  • Contains Silicones
  • Will not be very effective on dry to very dry hair type.
  • Not widely available in stores.

Closing Thoughts:

If you are looking for a shampoo with great fragrance and helps manage the frizz by giving it a straight body & sheen; go for it. If you have very dry hair, this wont work so don’t get waylaid by the claims.

  1. Very honest and informative review. I don’t rate the OGX range. The only one that seemed to tame my frizz is the Brazilian Keratin but I found it weight down my fine hair x

    • Hey Becca, Thanks for stopping by! I guess it works differently for different kinds of hair. Just yesterday I bought their Biotin and Collagen variety … lets see how it goes! <3
