The kind folks at Glamrada sent me a bunch of products to try from a new Indie Brand – Satliva. I am a great supporter of home-grown independent brands so I was happy to learn about Satliva and try out some of their offerings. One of the first thing that caught my interest was the soap bar mostly because of its beautiful packaging!

Satliva: Hemp with Avocado Handmade Body Soap | Review

The Satliva products sent me by Glamrada
Satliva specializes in Hemp Oil based products (Hemp has a notoriously popular cousin, I am sure you know – Marijuana!) Hemp Oil is known for its naturally preventive and curative qualities. It contains the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) Omega 3, 6 and 9, in the ratio very similar to Human DNA. It also contains 21 amino acids, including 9 essential amino acids, required by the human body.
I love to get an insight into how a brand originates and how ordinary folks like you and I take the big step towards entrepreneurship. So if this interests you check out the brand origins here.

Satliva: Hemp with Avocado Handmade Body Soap | Cost and Product Details
Ingredients:
Hemp seed Oil*, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Avocado Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil & Rosemary Essential Oil.
*Hemp seed oil is extracted and combined with other cold pressed oils and essential oils to bring you the finest chemical free products.
The soap comes packaged in a beautiful cardboard box elevating the experience of this handmade soap bar to the next level. The bar is further packed in a butter paper envelope and placed within the box. The box is sturdy enough to protect the soap. The soap by itself is a little soft and would have dented without the cardboard box.

Satliva: Hemp with Avocado Handmade Body Soap | Packaging and Claims
The soap has a very strong herbal fragrance which is mostly dominated by Peppermint and the rest I guess is due to the other ingredients. For the first few days after opening the product my bathroom also kept smelling of this soap. The smell of the product is quite overwhelming for me! I am not a fan of such strong herbal scents. Scent perception is extremely subjective and the fact that I didn’t like the smell does not in anyway mean that others might have a similar experience.
The soap lathers well and does a good job of cleansing the skin. But afterwards my skin felt stretched and dry! That’s a classic indication of de-hydration.
Generally the binders that hold a bar of soap together are in an alkaline base (high pH). This removes water and natural oils from the skin, causing the skin’s surface to dehydrate. This is exactly the reason why I avoid using Soap Bars and of course there is the additional hassle of the soap dish that will keep the soap dry!

Also Satliva fails to mention what is the lye that they are using for the Saponification (reaction that leads to the formation of soap is called the Saponification), and there is nothing I hate more than an incomplete ingredient list!
Despite having claimed to contain so many moisturizing ingredients the skin still feels tight after using this soap. I can also sense a greasy coating on my skin as well as on the bathroom floor!
Pros:
- Low Shelf Life – i.e contains less or no preservatives.
- Beautiful Packaging
Cons:
- Not available easily offline.
- Dehydrating
- Expensive

Satliva: Hemp with Avocado Handmade Body Soap | Final Thoughts
Closing Thoughts:
Unfortunately this soap did not work out for me partly due to my personal preferences towards fragrances & use of bar soap as well as due to the fact that it felt drying and therefore was not true to its claims. I was expecting a lot more from a Soap Bar that costs close to 400 INR and I hope the brand improves the formula in the future because I did enjoy some of their other products.
